Exclamation Mandrake - Diamond Viper II

I recently installed Mandrake 9.1. I am having problems with Xfree86 with my Diamond Viper II video card. When installing Mandrake I can pick Xfree86 3.3.6 or 4.3.0.

If I pick 4.3.0 the graphics are screwed up on my machine. The mouse pointer is a square that looks like a tiny desktop and I get this colorful 'snow' all over the text and images making it unusable.

If I pick 3.3.6 everything looks wonderful but about 95% of the programs won't start. They just flash a few times and then close when I try to open them.

I am running Mandrake on an older system and so I don't want to have to upgrade my video card if i don't need to.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks!
