You can install directly off the hard drive if you downloaded everything in the mandrake/9.2/i586 directory.

Just make a bootdisk using the /mandrake/9.2/i586/images/hd.img file and boot with that. Then you select the partition which has the downloaded files and then enter the path to the i586 directory.

To make the bootdisk just put a floppy in the drive and type this:
dd if=/mandrake/9.2/i586/images/hd.img of=/dev/fd0
You will need to alter the above path to match where you downloaded your files.

I did that, then I turned on proftp, made another disk using the network.img file, and installed on the kids computer using ftp. All that without a single CD.

Well I don't think randomly is the right way to do it. You should try to keep the same directory structure as the ftp server had but it doesn't need to be exact.

e.g. I go to
ftp://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu/linux/mandrake/9.2/i586
And I download the entire i586 directory into: /Download/9.2 now starting at /Download/9.2 my directory tree is exactly like I got it from the ftp server. If you do want to make cd's I think the rpm's should be split like this:

cd1= 9.2/i586
cd2= 9.2/contrib/i586 #All files except jpackage directory
cd3= 9.2/contrib/i586/jpackage

What you are attempting to do won't work.

Here's what you do though:

Download all the files, including all the folders & subfiles, to a directory on your hard drive (FAT32 or a linux partition).

Use rawrite or rawritewin to write the hd.img (in the image folder) to a floppy.

Boot off the floppy, then point the install to the place where you copied the files.

See #3 below:

Mandrake Linux

Installation Instructions - Mandrake Linux 9.2

Available (but may be outdated):

o ENGLISH
o FRENCH - doc/install/fr/README
o SPANISH - doc/install/es/README
o GERMAN - doc/install/de/README
o ITALIAN - doc/install/it/README

and many other languages; look at "doc/install/" there may be a
directory for your language. If not (yet); contributors are welcome!

============================================================================

+--------------------------------------------+
| Mandrake Linux - Installation instructions |
+--------------------------------------------+

Required configuration
* Pentium processor or compatible
* CDROM drive
* At least 32 MB RAM, 64 MB recommended

Installing Mandrake Linux is, in most cases, as simple as putting your
Installation CD in your CDROM drive, and restarting your machine.
Please refer to point 1.

NOTE:

* If you upgrade from 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 9.0 or 9.1
Mandrake Linux versions, do not forget to backup your system.
* Upgrading from earlier versions (prior to 7.0) is NOT supported.
In that case, you need to do a fresh installation and not an
update.

============================================================================

Below are listed the different ways to install Mandrake Linux:

1. Boot directly from CD
2. Make a boot floppy with Windows
3. Other install methods

============================================================================

1. Boot directly from CD

The Installation CDROM is bootable. In most cases, just insert the CD
into the drive and reboot the machine. Follow the instructions
displayed on screen: press the [Enter] key to start the installation,
or press [F1] for additional help.

NOTE:

On some portable computers, the system may not reboot from the
CD. If this is the case, try to boot from the second CD: it's
also bootable, and uses a "safer" boot process. When prompted,
change your CD. If the second CD doesn't boot as well, you
should prepare a boot floppy. See point 2 for details.

============================================================================

2. Make a boot floppy with Windows

If your computer cannot boot from the CDROM, you must make a
boot floppy under Windows as follows:

* insert the CDROM, then open the icon "My Computer", right click on
the CDROM drive icon and select "Open"
* go into the "dosutils" directory and double-click on the
"rawwritewin" icon
* insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive
* select "D:\images\cdrom.img" in the "Image File" field (assuming
that your CDROM drive is "D:", otherwise replace "D:" as needed)
* select "A:" in the "Floppy Drive" field then click on "Write".

To begin the installation:

* insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy, then
* restart the computer.

============================================================================

3. Other installation methods

If for any reason the previous methods do not fit your needs (you want
to perform a network install, an install from pcmcia devices or...),
you will need to make a boot floppy:

* Under Linux (or other modern UNIX systems) type at prompt:
$ dd if=xxxxx.img of=/dev/fd0
* Under Windows, follow the method described in point 2, but using
xxxxx.img (see below) instead of cdrom.img.
* Under DOS, assuming your CD is drive D:, type:
D:\> dosutils\rawrite.exe -f images\xxxxx.img -d A

where "xxxxx.img" is one of the available boot images:

+---------------+----------------------------------------------------+
| cdrom.img | install from CD-ROM |
|---------------+----------------------------------------------------|
| hd.img | install from hard-disk (from a Linux, Windows, or |
| | ReiserFS filesystem) |
|---------------+----------------------------------------------------|
| network.img | install from ftp/nfs/http |
|---------------+----------------------------------------------------|
| pcmcia.img | install from pcmcia devices |
|---------------+----------------------------------------------------|
| hdcdrom_usb.img |
| | install from hard-disk or cdrom connected to USB |
|---------------+----------------------------------------------------|
| network_gigabit_usb.img |
| | install from network with a gigabit or USB adapter |
|---------------+----------------------------------------------------|
| blank.img | install using your own Linux kernel |
+---------------+----------------------------------------------------+

To use `blank.img', build you own custom Linux kernel,
compiling all the necessary support inside the kernel image
(not as module). Then, after creating the floppy from
`blank.img', copy your "vmlinuz" kernel image onto the
floppy.

============================================================================

You can also use a text mode installation if, for any reason, you have
trouble with the default graphical installation. To use it, press [F1]
at Mandrake Linux welcome screen, then type "text" at the prompt.

If you need to rescue your existing Mandrake Linux system, insert your
Installation CDROM (or any relevant boot floppy), press [F1] at
Mandrake Linux welcome screen, then type rescue at the prompt.

See http://www.linux-mandrake.com/drakx/README for more technical
information.

============================================================================

Below are the main stages of installation:

1. Insert your Installation CDROM (or Installation Floppy disk if
necessary) and restart your machine.
2. Press [Enter] when the Mandrake Linux welcome screen appears and
carefully follow the instructions.
3. When the installation is complete take out the CD-ROM when ejected
(and any floppy disk if present in drive); your machine will
restart. If it does not, restart it manually.
4. Mandrake Linux will start. After bootup, you can login on your
machine under the user account setup during install, or as "root".

Important note:

The "root" account will give you unrestricted access to your Linux
system. Do not use it except to configure or administer Linux. For
every day use, use a normal user account which you can configure with
the "userdrake" tool, or with the commands "adduser" and "passwd".

Good luck with Mandrake Linux !

Start mcc (Mandrake Control Center) Select -> Software Management -> Software Media Manager.

Click Add. Check local files. Name it something.
path=/Where/you/downloaded/mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS
Relative path to synthesis= ../base/hdlist.cz

Click Add. Check local files. Name it something else.
path=/Where/you/downloaded/mandrake/9.2/contrib/i586
Relative path to synthesis= ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz

Click Add. Check local files. Name it something other than else.
path=/Where/you/downloaded/mandrake/9.2/contrib/i586/jpackage/i586
Relative path to synthesis= ../../../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist3.cz

<edit> This will work if you kept the same directory tree as the ftp server when you downloaded Mandrake 9.2 files.

Yes you can if. If your friend has fast network he can do an ftp install off the internet.

Also if you your friends computer has a NIC card you can wire them together and you can do an ftp install from your computer. You just need to install proftp urpmi proftp on your Mandrake computer. Setup both computers networking so you can ftp login to the Mandrake computer from the laptop. Then make a network boot CD.

You should be able to make a network install CD from what you downloaded off ftp.

Go to the mandrake/9.2/i586 directory and list the files. If you have all these files and directories then you should be able to create a bootable CDRom:

Code:
$ls
autorun.exe  dosutils/    INSTALL.txt       LICENSE.txt   README.txt
autorun.inf  images/      isolinux/         live_update*  RPM-GPG-KEYS
COPYING      index.htm    lang/             Mandrake/     VERSION
doc/         install.htm  LICENSE-APPS.txt  misc/
You can make a network bootable iso from the i586 directory like this:

mkisofs -b images/network.img -c images/boot.catalog -o /path/to/mandrake-9.2-cd.iso -x Mandrake .

The above command must be typed exactly as is even the last dot is part of the command. The only thing you can change is /path/to/mandrake-9.2-cd.iso that is where you want to put the iso image. Notice -x Mandrake this excludes the Mandrake directory and without doing this you'll end up with a iso bigger than 2.7Gig.

<edit> To burn the iso do this:
cdrecord -scanbus
cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 /path/to/mandrake-9.2-cd.iso

COOL TIP: By changing the image from images/network.img to one of the other images you can make any type of bootable CD you need. And it's small enough you could put it on a BBCard CD.

<edit> Oops the image should be images/network.img not images/cdrom.img. The cdrom.img will create a regular mandrake install cd minus the rpm packages.
