man pages number


Hi,

Can somebody tell me how the man pages numbers are defined?

I mean how "man 2, man5, man 7" are these all different?

I know that if u do man 2, it will give man page for the function... but not sure..

plz someoe share ur knowledge..

The man page layout is as follows:

1 - Commands
2 - System Calls
3 - Library Calls
4 - Special Files
5 - File Formats and Conversions
6 - Games for Linux
7 - Macro Packages and Conventions
8 - System Management Commands
9 - Kernel Routines

You might not have all these sections installed. Typically most of the stuff you'll need for programming in C is in sections 2 and 3. When in doubt, do a man -k to search.
