Make Ubuntu Linux work as a wireless router--wireless Internet sharing

My PC is connected directly to the cable modem. I would like to use my PC's WiFi card to share my internet connection with my Android phone and laptop so I can avoid buying a wireless router.

Well very interesting. And your question is?

maybe searching for linux, wireless and master mode helps, if not, explain your problem please.

But only if you're happy with "ad-hoc" wireless mode (which you shouldn't, for security reasons) or you buy an access point.

I assume the "question" of the OP targets at avoiding both by running the wifi-card in "master" mode. If not, he should probably clarify the question (by, for example, actually posing one)

Ah, yes the question...

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-...n-ubuntu-9-10/

I tried the instructions from the link above and was able to make a wireless network that only my PC "wireless router" could detect and connect to. Nothing came up on my Android wireless network scanner so it didn't help.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...nectionSharing

I would like to try this but frankly its a little over my head at this point.

And, so are the rest of the links.

So the question would be, is there a easy "point and clickly" way to set up my Ubuntu Linux desktop PC as wireless router or wireless access point?
Like maybe program that does all that command line stuff for me so I don't have to spend hours and hours trying to figure out what it all means.

Thank you for all the feedback.

Thumbs down Answer

By the way, I think it's awesome that this user asked what I thought was a perfectly reasonable question at first, got ragged on for "not asking a question", so then he asked a question in a way that I guess was more "acceptable", and then it went unanswered. How typical.

Back when this question was asked the answer was "no", there was no point and click way to do this. As far as I know the answer is still "no". I did this in the past the hard way and you had to have a specific brand of wifi card that took a specific linux driver such that you could put the card in "master" mode as one of the posters said. Then you would be able to set up your firewall rules, wifi security etc. The driver was the HostAP driver which was very cool and useful at the time b/c I could roll my own wifi router with as much or as little security as I wanted. The catch is this is a very old way to do it so WPA isn't supported. I'm wondering now if there is a similar way to do this somehow with current hardware using modern software tools. I've not found anything yet, but the search continues...

Why not root your phone and flash a ROM that comes with free tethering by default like Cyanogenmod? That's exactly what I do. I use MIUI Jellybean though.
