im trying to install the 2.4.22 kernel. i have rh9 and im having sound issues with the 20 kernel. i compile it and everything seems to be ok there but when i do make install. i get this error message .
tools/build -b bbootsect bsetup compressed/bvmlinux.out CURRENT > bzImage

Setup is 2518 bytes.
System is 1145 kB

+ '[' -x /sbin/installkernel ']'
+ exec /sbin/installkernel 2.4.22 bzImage /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/System.map ''
/lib/modules/2.4.22 is not a directory.
mkinitrd failed

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22/arch/i386/boot'

The critical error message is:
/lib/modules/2.4.22 is not a directory.

Take a look and see what is wrong with /lib/modules/2.4.22. If it is a file then delete it.

"its non existant. should i create the dir?"
No.

If 2.4.22 is non existant and make install is complaining about it then I agree with quatch that you have probably done the steps in the wrong order, or skipped a step, or gone through the steps twice or more without doing a make clean.
