mailer-daemon kills evolution

hi all

When i receive (via pop) a mailer-daemon (e.g.: mailer-daemon@mail.gmx.net after trying to send 7mb attached) evolution (version: 2.2.1.1) crashes trying to read the message. no matter how long I wait, it doesn't recover and blocks the hole system (Ubuntu 5.04). it really is annoying. i remeber running into the same problem with windows. but there, i was able to delete the mail after waiting a few minutes. here, this is no option for it crashes right away after being started and doesnt recover even after 8 hours.

does anybody now a solution apart from setting the hole thing (evolution) up again?

thank you

Yeah, don't use email for large file attachments, that's what ftp or scp was created for and have you tried deleting the mailer-daemon email, could just be a corrupt message most likely.

problem solved (sort of)

have you tried deleting the mailer-daemon email
hey trickykid.

i found an easy way to deal with this.
it is not a malformed message. it's the standard mailer-deamon message. but for some reason email clients (and even the online- inbox) try to display the attachments of the message that didnt make it to the other end. and i guess, the system is having a hard time interpreting a 7,8MB mp3 file in ascii letters and therefor it is not possible to delete the mail...

anyway, in the directory >home/user/.evolution/pop/< i deleted the dir that holds the account information. (in my case >kooling@gmx.net@pop.gmx.net<. so evolution doesnt know which emails have been downloaded in the past and is forced to download them all.
the good thing about this solution is, the other accounts, settings, "sent" folders and so forth stay unharmed!
first, of course, it is imperative to delete the mail, that is responsible for that mess, online so it will not be downloaded again.

thx for your help.

Okay so my suggestion to you now is if your using POP to retrieve email, don't leave a copy of the messages on the server, that's why they developed IMAP. Leaving messages on the server when dealing with POP can eventually screw up your mail client, like the example you've provided.

Trust me, having to overlook about 200 email accounts using qmail and POP, I had to beat some people over the head way too often to not keep copies of their messages on the server. If they wanted to share their inbox with a client at home when they're working at home, they needed to use IMAP instead. ;)
