Mail Server Backup Solution
 

I am looking for a backup solution for a mail server I will be installing on Fedora Core 5.

The backup solution would need to be quick and easy to restore the entire server. I have yet to order the hardware for this server because I am trying to get all my "eggs in one basket" first. I would like to go with a "tapeles" system, but I am not sure if I should order the hardware with dual hard drives or go with a network client/server solution.

Whatever would be the quickest to drop in a new hard drive and get back up and running with all the user info and configured mail server software.

Any info is appreciated.

What are you planning to use software wise?
Also, have you chosen a mailbox format (ie mailbox vs maildir)
Anti virus, spam-blocking, etc.

Any thoughts on these items would help.

My inital thoughts, and I'm no expert, would be to have a second drive with the relevant partition copied to it and either have mail files regularly copied to it (say rsync to keep all the ownerships intact) or perhaps backup the mail elsewhere. THat way, you sould be able to drop the drive into a similar machine and be on your way.


Depends a bit on the load, etc., etc.

We are going to be using the commercial product @Mail for the mail server software. I already have the demo in place on an older system, and it works well. It has a nice webmail interface, virus and spam filtering.

Some of the research I have done on this site is pointing my towards RAID 1 with an externel USB drive as a suplimental backup.

Any other suggestions would be greatly apprciated.
