Mailing inside the system may sound like a science of its own, but emailing just like you used to in windows is as simple as it always was. There's a choice of good apps. Check out evolution (for gnome), kmail (for kde) or thunderbird (for either).
To learn more about system mail (and to check if you have system mail) type 'mail' on the command line ('h' for help)

Compression depends on the type you want to use bzip, gzip, zip, rar, whatever. Each compression type has a different compression engine and you'll need to install it to be able to use it. Many distros come with a number of them in the basic installation. Of course it can all be done from the command line, but there are also gui's that can use a number of these engines to compress/decompress files. Personally I use 'fileroller' (in gnome) which automatically recognises and uses any new compression engine I install.
