You can, you just need to find the PPC version of the distro.

Gentoo has a PPC version, and it's pretty easy to find. I'd recommend that one specifically.

its hard work to do, i did it uner ubuntu and it took three or four tries to get it right.

Your going to have to back everything up first on your powerbook( use carbon copy cloner for this, and you can make a bootable back up)

1. Boot from your Osx install cd and use disk utility to create a partition for tiger and then leave free space after that for linux. EVERYTHING WILL BE LOST (good job you backed up)

2. Quit disk ultility and follow the tiger install and choose the apple partiton you created. You will want to customise the install, remove world book and all the jazz maybe enable X11 cause its amazing. The default install takes between an hour and a and hour and a half ( belive me i did it twice before i saw the customise option)

3. Dl a ppc distro (id go live cd). Boot into your distro and follow the installer. Using ubuntu i used use largest free space option ( did this on the desktop aswell). If your lucky it will work, if not you'll have problems with the apple boot strap partition. Not a clue what to do with that.

4. Should be done and if you reboot you'll get an option of which os to use. Linux is the default, if you want to change this ( under ubuntu) you'll have to edit /etc/yaboot.conf and add defaultos=osx maybe change the linux label to your distro's name. You'll also want to edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file and remap the mouse keys for two and three buttons, you'll have to google for that

Airport will work, the drivers have been reverse engineered and can be added to the kernal, Though i havent bothered yet.
Sorry if i treated you n00bish , just stuff i wish id known when i started
