Question looking fore an emulator or compatibility layer.

Hi I have the worst thing in the world,
A brother.
OK just kidding
But he likes games like the Sims 2, Age of Empires 3, and WarCraft 3.
I tried to use Wine but had some problems with is.
Now I think that Cedega would work,
But I don't like having to pay fore what Wine tels us its supposed to do.

So I think that the question I have is if another app might do the job,
Then which one,
Is it free?

Well, if you have an old copy of Windows around, I've installed Win98 into Vmware server (or you could try using Qemu). Vmware server is free as in beer, but not free as in freedom. I find the virtual machine setup works okay for my older games that aren't graphics intensive. You might need XP if the games are too new. If they use advanced graphics, your mileage may vary since I'm not sure how the graphics is handled in the virtual machine (i.e. if it's interfacing with your hardware or just a generic driver like VESA).

Otherwise, I've just used Wine...

Thanks.
I Think that if one of thous will work with either the CD of xp or vista then the only thing is that the games can use both hardware and software graphics services so if the emulator can support both types of graphic services then I'm in business,
So doughs one?

I'm fairly certain Vmware 1.0 didn't have hardware acceleration, but you might try the new 2.0 beta.

Not sure about Qemu. I'd just install both if you have the space (you need to store the filesystem image, so like 10GB for XP) and give it a whirl. If it doesn't work well, you can fiddle with the settings.

Googling around, I just stumbled across VGML which might work for the hardware acceleration, but I've never used it and it looks like it's alpha.

So I have a lot of space,
But I wonder if the software would be as vonurable as windows to hackers,
And also is that windows CD loaded to a server,
Or the computer harddrive.

I do have both a server with 200GB and a internal harddrive with 280GB available to me.

as to if the security would be an issue,
And it goes on the server then great because my new one has a multi frame scanning tool that handles an overly precocious set of data.

I'm sure there are some vulnerabilities, but I just use Vmware server on my desktop. You download it and install it, but it doesn't run all the time. You fire it up when you want to use XP (or whatever OS you installed -- you can install more than one). XP is installed into a big image file on the hard drive. Basically the big file is just a block of space that mimics a separate hard drive. So you could have an XP install, a Vista install, a Debian install, etc. Then you just start Vmware and choose the "machine" that you want to boot up. I think Vmware manages the file size dynamically.

So would it be possible to somehow select the server to download the image file to?

I'm not sure what you mean... Vmware Server is a user space application. Do you mean you want to put the actual image file on another machine? You probably could do that just by mounting a network share and then installing the image there.

Install it and fiddle around, you'll see what I mean. There's some "Appliances" (i.e. images) on the Vmware website that you can just download and use, like Red Hat or Suse appliances.

OK so which one do you think would have the best chance of running the games Qemu, beer, freedom, or VGML?
Note I now I could jest try them all.

O and where do you find all thous apps?

I doubt those games will run at any good speed in a vm, even with hardware acceleration, unless you have a really good computer

Crossover Linux, or just dual-booting, you could try running those games in a vm, but I doubt they will run fast

Crossover Linux I have seen posts about that but I'm afraid that I don't know what it is.

I would like to point out that the app should be free, safe, and work with fedora 8.

So what can you tell me about Crossover Linux?

Crossover Linux costs money, but its basically an enhanced version of wine, it tends to be more for office programs, but I would imagine it would work better then wine for games
