login troubles

first off, when i was using rh8 my session manager had a "system" button for shutting down. gdm's doesn't in this slack9 version... why?

but my real question. i can't log in as my regular user, only root! i get an error about permissions before the gnome loading screen even comes up. i tried chmod 777 /tmp as i was told and it didn't work, then no one responded to my "it didn't work" reply, so i'm asking again.

Umm ...

What happens if you boot
into init 3 and then login as
root, and start gdm manually?

Cheers,
Tink
