logger freezes during startup

I have Fedora Core 4. I changed /var to /var.old, using runlevel 1. However, there was a need to change to runlevel 3. I did it and when i restarted the the PC froze at "starting logger"; it probably has to do with renaming /var.
What can i do?
I thought using a LiveCD, but they usually mount hd partitions read-only.
Any ideas?

use a cd to boot into your system
then mount your hard drive
find the var* and rename it back.
then dismount the disc with umount
reboot your system and make sure the cd is removed.
