log on a linux system

Hello. I want to set up a linux server, where I can log on, have my own directory and switch on internet, start programs from......
So that it is not just a file server. I want to be able to work on the computer from my. I looked by google, but i am not sure for what I have to look.

Log on how? Work on the computer from my what? Remote access i.e not working on the PC itself?

For starters for remote access there is telnet ( not recommended for security reasons), ssh, tightvnc.
