Question log information - newbie

I own a small manufacturing company in SoCal and have a basic linux question - I think. We have a web server running Mandrake 8.1 or 8.2. It started crashing every few hours this week with a kernel error after running fine for months. Is there a way to determine in the logs what could have been installed/changed recently on the server. My IT manager swears he didn't do anything, but I have my suspisions. I have looked around in the logs, but am not certain what exactly to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not really sure how good this is but you can view files sorted by time and see the ones created recently

ls -Rclt / | grep - | less

I would also say check the log files and see what's wrong.

What kind of kernel error? How recent are your versions of core stuff like apache and associated mod_'s? As DavidP pointed out - looking to see what's been added would be a good start.

You could compare the newer apache error logs to the older (pre-crash) logs and see if anything stands out.

You should also have a look in the box itself. I've had temperature probs before that gave mysterious crashes.
