Log Devices Plugged in?

Hey all-

I know in windows xp there is a registry key and an entry in the Plug and Play log file as well as maybe an event id, that is produced when a device (say usb) is plugged in.

My question is, besides /var/log/ (messages?) is there any other location that that information is stored in?

Thanks!

Thanks for the response...

If I understand correctly dmesg is output to /var/log

My question is are there any OTHER typical storage locations such as log files that might contain that type of information?

Some distro's have /var/log/user.log, but I don't know if it would contain mounts performed on the users behalf.

You could add an entry in /etc/syslog-ng.conf to log just hal daemon messages to another log file. It would contain messages about mounting a filesystem on behalf of a user (indicating the UID in the log entry).

You could also use grep to filter just the messages you want in /var/log/messages.
