Lockups when using games

Hello. I'm not quite sure WHERE to post this, but it's been bugging me a lot lately.

I happen to game a few times and right now the most demanding game I play is Nexuiz (all things to max and so, some of the effects are impressive, really).

Anyway.. I get lockups.. Not just from the game, the entire computer locks up and I have to reset it (no virtual consoles, nothing). I've noticed it takes a little longer to get grub up and running after this too..

I looked in /var/log/kern.log and saw this which happened shortly before what I read as a new boot process:
Code:

But looking at it, the time is way off apart from the final errors which seems to deal with the Nvidia driver.
As you can see I've pasted in some extras to show that NVRM(Nvidia) was the last thing to get logged before the system dies and I do a reboot..

Any potential fixes ? As crazy as this may sound, I'm contemplating moving gaming and everything over to Linux and thrashing my XP cds for good.

Well in my case Dark Carnival, if/when I get those sort of problems when playing a game (which isn't often - as I'm not much of a gamer), it always seems to be connected with my systems graphics ability i.e. I have quite an ancient Geforce 4 M420 (nv17) card that has only 64 megs of graphics memory, which seems in some way connected with the slowing/stopping/freezing of the game - I often wonder if it's connected with the system overloading the graphics memory and then trying to use/share either the main onboard ram, which, as far as I can tell isn't configured to act as shared graphics memory, so I'm suspecting that it's trying to share/swap the graphics data with the main system /swap - which I'd guess is bound to slow the system, well at least the graphics, down to a crawl (or the occassional stop).

I'm thinking of replacing my graphics card. Though I don't know if the above reflects the problem that you're experiencing or not (it just sounds very familiar to me!).

regards

John

The errors in the log indicate a hard drive problem; it's reporting a seek error at defined portions of the hard drive (do you hear a lot of clattering and clunking from the box on boot up?). This may not be be an accurate cause though. If you are playing very intensive games and the whole system is freezing it may in fact be due to the processor over heating. I don't know whether you use something like GKrellm to monitor your hardware but such an application would tell you if this is happening. If the processor overheats all calculations going through it are incorrect which leads to errors and then eventually everything grinds to a halt. If this is not the cause then you need to get a piece of software from the hard drive manufacturer to carry out tests on the drive. If this comes up clean then check your memory with an application called memtest_86 which runs off a floppy. If you get to the last stage it needs to run for some hours unless the memory is really poor in which case you will see errors almost immediately. I am pretty sure that your problems are hardware related.
