Question little bash question

I'm sure this can be done. How can I make bash run a command and then release the prompt back to my control with out exiting the command or program I just ran?

You can use & to launch a program in the background. For example:
/usr/local/bin/run_my_reports &

Also read the man page for nohup. You might find it useful also.
