Question Listening on a serial port

I have a blood analyzing maching that embeds messages in packets to send to the serial port (ttyS0) of my RH box. When the packet is received, I need to send an acknowledgement back automatically.

My problem is I don't know where to start. I want to be able to upload lab results to my server. I have the spec file from the company that manufactures the analyzer.

How do I get Linus to 'listen' for the packet, and then respond? (I know what to listen for and what to send in the response, I just don't know what tools to use to listen and respond with).

TIA
Caleb

These HOWTOs might be some use:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO.html

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Serial-Pro...WTO/index.html

I think most examples will be in C. If you want something higher level there seem to be some possibilities e.g.

http://pyserial.sourceforge.net/

Hi thanks for the links. I read both HOW-To's and I am not a C programmer so it was mostly greek to me. So I am looking for something higher level that is simple.

I got the pyserial thing working so we're off to the races. I think.

Thanks
Caleb
