List of built-in utilities and programs?

Hi, i've been using linux off an on for a couple months now, and i run my box in terminal only mode. i have rh9, and i like to challenge myself with using the console only, as i have no need for any graphical webbrowsing or anything. i was just using my box as a server for awhile, and after having it off for awhile, i turned my box back on today and felt the need to get even more familiar with the console. i know most basic filesystem commands, but there are many more programs, like df, to find out the free space on the drives. when i wanted to see how much disk i had used, i had to search the forums and i found out about it. so is there some kind of list of the most common console programs included with most distros, so i can learn some more of them?

You can check out this site:
http://www.linuxselfhelp.com/cats/commands_shells.html

And the ones below in my sig. Also type man man in a terminal to find out how man works. I also have a book "Linux Commands Instant Reference" which comes in handy. It cost me around $17 US.

My favorite unknown command is dc. It is an extremely powerful Reverse Polish calculator. In Mandrake it is in the bc package. I made up a floppy set to run it on any intel machine, taking Martin's Mandrake, deleting a file and putting dc on it. Works great for those who want it without modifying HD.

If you want a square root t 1,000 digits, dc is for you.

However, I usually use it for adding my journal entries, wherein I write all my expenses.

To invoke it, simply type: dc <enter> at the command prompt

Then, type: 2 k <enter> to set 2 digit decimal resolution, etc.

To add numbers, examples,

2 3 + 78 + 9.28 + p <enter>

The p prints the answer. There is a lot more, look at: man dc

Oh, yeah, q <enter> to quit and return to command prompt.

Press your <TAB> twice, then all your accessible commands will be listed!
Then type "man commandname" to learn more about it!
