United Linux: Redhat competition ??

Just read some news off www.linuxgram.com of a possible team up of some Linux distro players to compete against Redhat. Read the full story here: http://www.linuxgram.com/article.pl?...tion=newsflash

i think it's the time for slackware, debian and rock to do the same, but against what?! :D

Red Hat is the Microsoft of Linux? I could believe that. They're software sucks and they hord all new Linux users to thier distro.

:D

Well... I believe there are only 2 real distro in the Linux World
Slackware and RedHat

Slackware is near Debian
RedHat is near Mandrake

But Redhat is more like a commercial distro, so they have more money, so they grow faster... That can be bad (stupid $*%?*$ rpm) but I believe Linux really need this... A OS can't grow only by and for for normal users... linux need big company support...

(But hopefully AOL hasn't buy RedHat finally !!) :p

Woah, troll alert! Red Hat's software doesn't suck, it's just put together for a different market. Red Hat doesn't expect newbies to be using their distribution, so they don't have newbie friendly config tools (although installation is a doddle).

FWIW, Mandrake's tools aren't perfect either - e.g. XFDrake in the distro you are using kernal has a habit of overwriting any alterations you make to /etc/X11/XF86Config...

Troll, ha ha ha. I think what he was trying to say before he got carried away and started bashing **LINUX** was that RedHat has a good hold on the market, and are tailoring things to their distro. But, as danrees was saying, it's not a bad thing. If people like the way things are tailored to their smooth running OS, that shouldn't be frowned upon. If you don't like it, then you don't have to use, the nice thing about having different distros.

And if none of them suit your needs, there is always LFS...

Don't hate a fellow **LINUXER** buddy.

Red Hat linux is easy available one.
You can get its CD from some books on RHLinux.

i think this is the secret behind the popularity of RH Linux.
More over some magazines(like PCQuest in india) distribute redhat linux cd free with their issues

crashmeister 05-29-2002 05:43 AM

He,He - funny
They take the main softwaremanagingtool from RH (rpm) and then decide it's the evil Linuxempire.
Those guys better come up with something better than rpms if they are serious. Suse should be more concerned about fixing the bugs in Suse 8.0 anyway.
