I update all my linux systems and I have not run into any problems yet, Sometimes updating the kernel can give you some problems but nothing that a bit of recompiling cant fix

I can truly say some want the latest and greatest and update all the time.

I say if the current packages work for you, why upgrade just cause there is a later version out. Unless it has some feature you want, there is no need to update. Or if there is no security issue, I say there is no need to update.

I agree the security updates are my main reason for updating. I mean if it aint broke dont fix it. but as for my eariler post being kinda vague, most ppl having troubble updating dont usually read what they are updating and will either update to something that is not going to work with there system. When you do update look at what you are updating and if it is not going to help you by updating I would just leave it. But if you pay attention to what you are updating you should not have any problem... atleast I have not.

You should definitly recompile your kernel if you havent already. If you use a stable kernel, its really painless and really increases your performance (if you adjust the settings for your computer, which isnt hard)

Check the slackware forum for a great tutorial. Ive used it about 5 times, and it worked w/o a single problem each time.
