Linux sound???

Well - after loosing my USB headset as primary sound output and having a fun time hunting down what to do about it I started getting confused.

Does anybody know of a resource that has up-to-date general information about wtf is going on with sound in Linux?

This post pretty much sums up what also seems to be slightly confusing to me.

Could you be a bit more specific. What kind of USB headset ? It broke ? You need a new one ? Or it stopped working ?

Don't worry about the headset - I got that going. Was just a matter of telling alsa what to use as default output (which is messy enough BTW).

I was just interested if anybody knows of such a site because most things you find are outdated, plain wrong, distro specific or all of those.

It seems like kde4 is going to fix my specific problem (easy switching between output hardware) but it would be nice to know a site has updated info about the sound system (really wouldn't call it system - that implies, well,ah:being systematic).
