I didn't actually compile a kernel myself, but did the most basic Debian install according to The Very Verbose Debian 3.0 Installation Walkthrough. Only place I deviated was the partitioning. But I believe there are modules, though I can't say for sure. All I've grabbed from apt-get is cdrecord (which doesn't work because my DVD+-RW isn't recognized yet), Mozilla and Evolution. I did add a rc.local script to it, but can do that again easily, as well as grab those few apps, if they disappear.

So, do I need to *grab all those things mentioned above as well* or just let 'em go?

You'll still need to grab em. Those are where the modules are kept (likely if that directory exists you've got some modules in it).

You can also check if you have modules loaded already (that'd be a tell tale sign ;) ):
/sbin/lsmod

Well, the Slackware8.1 is a convenience thing :)
Call me lazy! Sooner or later (after most C++ source
has been migrated to comply to ANSI standards, and
thus makes gcc >= 3.X happy) I'll certainly move on,
just can't be bothered for now. If you're willing to learn
a lot you can basically do things like these on any distro,
I just prefer Slack because it leaves all the decisions to
me, and I like to be responsible for my OS (rather than
relying on others to have checked dependencies thoroughly
enough to please me) :} ... a great many of Debian users
are more than content, too, so are Gentoo or LFSers...

I don't see where you all get this slowness, I work with Mandrake mostly, although with Debian I get the same speeds and I get better response time in Linux than I do in Windows in general...although I've got nothing scientific to back it up.

KDE loads slow(ER)...but its like a few seconds...so what?

When you get past the 512Megs 1.2 ghz...so what if it takes 6 seconds as opposed to say 4? I mean really. I could understand if it was like on my p133 where KDE takes like a couple of minutes to load but c'mon :D

And anyways, I use blackbox which speeds things up plenty.

with my Slackware.

All I said is that a load of apps with similar
size and funtionality start faster in win2k
than in slack, which is the trade-in for a
longer boot-sequence... still the fact remains
that OO will load in 14 seconds on a PIV 1.6,
256MB whereas Winword in Win2K is there
instantaneously (<1.5sec) ... not that I use it,
mind you, but I hada chance to test that 16
months ago ;) when I got the machine :D

My comment wasn't aimed at you (or anybody actually) :D Personally, your post was quite succinct and cleared up a few things I wondered about.

It was just a general rant about the "slowness" of things...I have a couple of friends on rant on about how slow KDE is (we're talking on P4s with max RAM) when it takes like 2 seconds to load...I just don't get it.

Personally I find linux works, loads and responds better than Windows in 90% of my daily stuff...and its not like I tinkered a whole lot with either OS on some of my machines (I will admit to tinkering a LOT on my laptop to get great performance).

My best compliment was when my dad showed off his new company laptop (a P4 1.8 with 512 megs of ram that would make any techie DROOL...what a waste) with WinXP and he watched me do something on my laptop (a P333 with 192 Megs of RAM) in blackbox and he said "Boy I wish this laptop responded like yours does..."

Tink, thanks for the reply! The time frame is np. My family suffers sometimes, too, and I'm glad to hear you consider yours. About to compile my first Debian kernel...we'll see how it goes. Thanks for your Slack response...I want to try it, also. From you and MasterC it looks like it's a toss-up between 8.1 and 9.0 depending upon what I want personally. So, maybe I'll toss a coin with 8 on one side and 9 on the other after I get my DVD burner to working, and give it a go! Choices, love those Linux choices! Gotta check out this Fluxbox job also. :D

Please tell me what to get for PGP. I have to have it where I am and what I do. I've been using it in Windoze, and don't want this to be the one thing that causes me to have to boot into Windoze, or turn around and use my lappy. I actually have GnuPG gnupg-1.2.0.tar.bz2 in my list of goodies here, but the docs were so confusing :confused:

Can I import PGP keys used in Windoze into this program in any way? And does it work with Evolution? No one could give me an answer to that when I posted.

I'm still using 1.0.7 here, and it works great
for me, seamless integration into KMail. As for
the exchange of keys: I think that you can import
PGP keys into GPG, never needed to, though.
As for evolution: again, I don't used it, but I'm sure
someone else here will be able to tell you :)
