I use PCLinuxOS. Ive been using linux for like a week, so Im learning the basics.
All my problems started when I started to use my cdrom. Sometimes as soon a I insert an audio cd and my machine reboots itself! It doenst matter if it is regular audio or mp3. Linux doesnt function well when i put it in, I get many errors b4 and during the booting process. Ive gotten many read-only file system erorrs. Ive ran system integrity check many times to fix the errors.Here is an example of the errors I get: (ignore the spanish if it is better for you)
-Could not start Kdeinit. Check your installation.
-Bringin up interface ath0:...
-/dev/sda6: Inode 17990344, i_blocks is 1248, should be 1256. FIXED
luego:
-/dev/sda6: (there are 2 inodes containing multiply claimed blocks)
-/dev/sda6: File /home/guest/.kde/share/config/kuinrulesrc (inode #25674317, mode time Tue Mar 21 01:25:17 2006) has 1 multiply claimed blocks), share with 1 file(s).
-/dev/sda6: /home/guest/.xine/catalog.chache (inode #25722902 ....) has 1 multiply claimed blocks), share with 1 file(s).
-/dev/sda6: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN fsck MANUALLY (i.e. , without -a or -p options)
-Failed to check file system. Do you want to repair the erros? (Y/N) y
-Cd-rom read or access error (or no audio disc in drive) Please make sure your hace access permissions to: /dev/cd rom
-There was an error loading in the module, KHTML. The diagnostic is: Library files for: "libkhtmlpart.la not found in paths.
-Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: Read-only file system.
-Will not save configuration. Configuration file "/home/guest/.kde/share/knoquerorrc" not writable.
-Configuration file "/home/guest/.kde/share/config/kdeglobal.ls" not writable. Please contact your system administrator.
-Could not start process Unable to create io-slace: Read only file system.
You have a corrupted file system and some are linked to xine which is perhaps associated with the system crashing out.
I am assuming you are using ext2 and would recommend upgrading to at least ext3 which is journalised. Use the command as root;
/sbin/tune2fs -j /dev/sda6
Before doing this you need to boot the system up with Konppix or similar because you need to repair an unmounted file system. Once you have a desktop open a root consol and do e2fsck /dev/hda6 and allow it to repair the file system. Having reapired it upgrade the file system to ext3.
ok i had to change my cdrom cos the other one did not detect a disc to boot from. I got into knopix and this is what I got from the commands:
tunefs --} the filesystem already has a journal
e2fsck ---) no such device or addresse while trying to open /dev/hda6 Possibly non-existent or swap devise?
If I cant get this to work, Ill install linux again but Im worried about loosing my files.
Try repeating the repair. If you continue to have problems then I would suggest downloading a disk diagnostic tool from the drive manufacturer and running the tests on that to make sure that there is nothing major wrong with the drive itself. If the disk checks out ok then you have only 2 options;
re-install the system from a backup (if you have one) or do a re-install. You may be able to recover any critical files to floppy using Knoppix.
