If your looking at a paper to do Linux vs Microsoft or along those lines.. might want to try searching the forums, we have plenty of those flamewars existing here.

Our great search feature link found here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/search.php

A news site like www.osnews.com might help.

If you are going to write about the threat to Windows that Linux presents, then you will either have a very large document on your hands, or you can refine it a little - which area of computing? 'Desktop' use (God, I hate that term), server markets? Others?

I agree with Edward 78, www.osdata.com covers a wide range of OS's. However, (and I'm not trying to start a flame war here) the site is terribly biased against Microsoft and does not give an accurate comparison IMO.
