Linux or BSD?

Hey,

I did lot of 'homework' on Open Source. At first when experimenting with it I felt I could never do without Windows. There was always some crucial thingy that would only run on Windows. Now I get to learn more and more about Linux and I don't even use Windows anymore. But now something else got my attention... BSD.

I learned that GNU is some sort of UNIX (not really but...) And Linux is just a kernel. BSD runs on the same very same GNU OS. BSD is also just a kernel.

So everything that runs on Linux should also run on BSD? The awnser I got was actually "no". GNU/BSD is able to run most GNU/Linux apps but it also does not...

I am a bit confused now. Although I read a lot about BSD I don't seem to see the actual difference. From what there is present in BSD is said to be better compard to Linux, but there is also a lot of stuff in the Linux kernel that is not out there in the BSD kernel. So what the actual difference between GNU/Linux and GNU/BSD? Is there actually a GNU/BSD or did I misunderstood? What are the pro's and the con's?

BSD does not run on a GNU OS. BSDs are complete OSes, although GNU tools and apps can be installed on BSD. Linux is indeed just a kernel and its usually used in conjunction with tools from the GNU project (thats why some call it GNU/Linux). Many apps that work on BSD or Linux, will work on other Unix like OSes although some apps may need a bit of modification. As for which is better, that depends on the situation and what you are trying to use the OS for.

Desktop use. I really like KDE:

-multimedia
-open office
-wine
-id software games, unreal tournament 2004
-vmware (in the future)
-browsing the web
-msn

I have a ATI card, but because of the bad driver support that will change to nVidia...

I use KDE on FreeBSD and it works just as good as it does on Linux. Multimedia support is good on FreeBSD and nvidia provides official drivers for FreeBSD. OpenOffice, vmware and WINE are also available.

Does it also work with ATI drivers? I know they are bad and I am going to buy a nVidia card in about six weeks but I like to experiment with it allready. Are there some live cd's/dvd's for me to try?

Does anyone have a badder experience with BSD compared to Linux?

There are things like Macromedia (Adobe) Flash which don't have BSD versions. So, to use flash you need Linux ABI under BSD. Not everything Linux has is ported for BSD. In this case you need Linux ABI again. Linux libraries installed are not very latest and some bleeding edge software may not run.
Don't get me wrong, I love BSD as I love Linux. Just trying to answer your question.

That does not really matter to me because BSD can run Linux software even faster than Linux itself(I read that somewehere in the internet - correct me if I am wrong!) and I allready love the speed of Linux so...

My point is that I love Open Source, I am just looking for a OS that suits my needs the best way
