Linux on Windows8

I downloaded «ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64» and try to install it on my new «Acer-Aspire-V5-Windows 8 64-bit», but failed.
Have anyone installed any Linux distro on Windows 8?
Please help me!

How did it fail? What messages did you receive? What process did you follow?

Unless you're talking about a VM setup, you don't install Linux or any other OS "on" Windows, you install it "next to" or "instead of" Windows. So, what is it you're trying to do here?

You don't describe the problems you got but I can tell you my experience with a new Dell laptop that I received a few months ago.
I tried to install Mageia2 and failed because of the UEFI partitioning (locked by Microsoft).
I was glad to find that the BIOS offer an option to disable UEFI.
So I disabled UEFI and reinstalled Win8.
A month later, I was so disgusted by Win8 that I uninstalled it and installed Win7.
And now, I'm running XP in a virtual machine under Linux.

I might suggest a free virtual machine also if your system has enough resources. Consider making any backup disks before you start this. Create either a live usb or dvd to recover the system to windows if available.

I think a few have started to be more easy to install. OpenSuse 12.3, Fedora 18/19I think has uefi as well as ubuntu 13.

In BIOS: I Enable F12 - for booting from CD/DVD - and I disabled UEFI.
But it will not boot from DVD.

Is there a legacy mode in the BIOS? If so, this will make your UEFI BIOS act like good ol' normal BIOS. And the dvd should bootup without issues.

I remember reading if you have a certified windows 8 logo desktop/laptop, the UEFI is supposed to be disable easily to allow other operating systems to be installed, but this isn't always the case for some people.

Microsoft and the OEMs are not being fair to the consumers when disabling UEFI. We know for a fact that microsoft doesn't want linux to be installed and you know they won't admit that.

This assumes you have made a good dvd from a known tested download.

From here. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI See all the page.

"Installing Ubuntu Quickly and Easily via Trial and Error

If you have a computer that is more recent than 2010 and you do not know whether or not you need to install Ubuntu in EFI mode, you should be able to get Ubuntu installed quickly and correctly using the following steps:

Create a LiveDVD or LiveUSB of Ubuntu (>=12.04.2) 64bit.

In your BIOS, disable QuickBoot/FastBoot and Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT). If you have Windows8, also disable FastStartup.

Boot your PC using the LiveDVD or LiveUSB and choose "Try Ubuntu". If you get a Secure boot or signature error, you may wish to disable SecureBoot as described here, then retry to boot the disk.
Install Ubuntu from the Live CD/DVD or Live USB in the usual manner, then reboot the PC.

If the PC does not load Ubuntu (but instead loads Windows, for example, as in Bug #1050940), or if the Windows entry in the GRUB 2 menu does not boot Windows (see Bug #1024383), boot your PC using the Live CD/DVD or Live USB and choose "Try Ubuntu" once again. When the live session has loaded, run Boot-Repair (see link for details). When Boot-Repair loads, click on the "Recommended repair" button, and write on a paper the URL (paste.ubuntu.com/XXXXXX/) that will appear. Then reboot the pc.

This should fix most boot problems. If this does not fix your boot problems, please create a new thread in this forum, describing your problem and indicating the URL you wrote in the previous step. "

I tryed to boot Linux Mint14 Live, and it work (with legasy BIOS). But when trying to install Linux Mint14 from the Live CD/DVD I got this message:
This computer currently has no detected operating system, what would you like to do?
I got two choices: Choice 1 – Erase and install Linux Mint
Choice 2 – Something else - create or resize partition, or choose multiple partition for Linux Mint.
What can I do? I should like to have bouth Linux Mint and Windows8.

I would strongly recommend buying virtual machine software, such as VMWare, or if you prefer download Google's "VirtualBox."

Don't do anything to the host-OS (Windows8 in this case). Don't re-partition the drive. Buy an external (USB or Firewire) hard drive to use as the Linux sysres volume. (They are positively cheap now.)

Intel chips have native hardware support for virtualization.

We are put into a situation where we don't want you to wreck your current windows install. I get the impression that if we continue trying to help you, your system may require a complete re-install.

Do you have the ability and knowledge to recover your computer from catastrophic data loss on hard drive? Do you have the ability to reload windows from dvd?

What would you say your skill level is with linux and with windows?
