Linux on Fetch TV box

Hi all,
I have 2 Fetch TV boxs but no longer subscribe to Fetch, as a result they will no longer work as a PVR, from what I have seen a lot of other people have them to, So my question is there a flavour of Linux that can be setup on a Fetch box to make it work as a PVR?
It would be such a waste to throw them out.

Morbs.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions

It appears from the link below that the box already runs some version of linux. So in theory it should be possible to install something else but without knowing anything about the hardware it is impossible to say. Because it is an embedded device linux has to be ported for the processor as well as have the drivers for the video and IR hardware interfaces. Unless it is a fairly generic device it might take some reverse engineering.

At $399, you'd think taking them to a charity place would be better than throwing it away.

Usually I look for web pages that tell of someone else doing an update. Then I look to the OEM for any update images and then peek into them. If you don't have either then you would be on your own with it.

If the thing does have a hard drive as michaelk's link says then you may have a perfect way to test distro's. You'd have to peek into the drive and discover what kind of system it runs on and how to edit it or modify it. Best to make a clone of the drive and play with the clone image in a VM like qemu or on a new drive. That way you can't bork your golden image.

If the OPs device matches the link I posted then I believe the drive is just for data and configuration files etc and the operating system is in the embedded device. However the link does show the device's boot messages so it may be possible to discover something about it.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, so inreality ZI should just get a PVR as that is all I was after, was hoping that I could convert one to a PVR.

Thanks again
Morbid
