Linux not using al Physicall memory

Hi There,

I have 2 linux servers Both having 1 GB memory. Both servers has been installed (initial) with 512 MB.

Now when I top I see the following:

Mem: 1011408k total, 228088k used, 783320k free, 67460k buffers
Swap: 3335764k total, 131340k used, 3204424k free, 110216k cached

It don't uses whole memory, it start swapping at 400-500 MB while one of my other servers first uses his memory and when the memory has been used it starts swapping.

Something wrong with my configuration? Anyway I hope someone can help me out with this:

We are using RH4 Update 3

Linux xxxxx.xxxx.oracle.com 2.6.9-34.EL #1 Fri Feb 24 16:44:51 EST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Thanks!
Ronald

You work for oracle? Impressive.

Anyway, check your vm swappiness (the setting that tends to control how much the system swaps out). This is set through /proc/sys/vm/swappiness.

Hi David,

Thanks for your update. No, swappiness has been lowered with 10 already withoutsucces. Even when switching it off the swap deamon keep takeing all IO.

When I increase the mem to 1500 MB (The Linux instance is running at VWware) it stop swapping until the half of the memory is used then it starts again.
So for some reason half of the available physical memory is used and the rest ignored.

Thanx,
Ronald
