Linux mint admin password

I had a h/p laptop that ran X/P that I gave to a friend to take to one of the guys he knows to repair the X/P installation. What I got back was a Dell laptop that runs on Linux Mint. The guy that installed the op system is not available to consult with at the moment. So yes I got the proverbial slap on the shoulder and "best of luck" send off. I need to know how to set my Admin password and also how to get my freeagent ext. hard drive to run with my operating system.I'm not a developer I'm an industrial machinery mechanic by trade so withhold the "snarky geeky comments to yourselves. I just simply need simple concise solutions to solve my problems that I'm encountering. I asked these questions on the Linux mint boards and the geniuses there were NO HELP! They refused to offer solutions to my problem. The guy that installed the OS is NOT AVAILABLE for guidance at the moment, that is why I'm reaching out to y'all. Thanks.

When Mint was installed, the person doing the installation created a user and gave that user a password. That user is the admin, and that user's password is the admin password. Were you given the credentials for this account? If not, you'll need to boot a recovery disk to reset the password.

Hey Einstein what do you suggest that I do if I do not have the recovery disk? Which I do not have as I said I gave him a laptop to repair and got another one back with the OS installed and no hard copy of the software. I'm sorry if my terse reply seems rude to you but if I had to resources you mentioned I would have resolved the matter myself, and not would have reached out to the message board for help.

How to reset your password in Ubuntu
is the reference.
Works for LM also.

Linux Mint is free, you can download the installation ISO from their website.

I was trying to be helpful. I realize you didn't get much assistance elsewhere, but you need to cut the attitude or you won't get any help here either.

hortageno, I have not been able to get registered on the Linux Mint board yet. That was my first place to look for a solution to the problem, but I was unable to get the "secret code" in order to register on the forum board as of yet. However thanks for providing the bypass for me.

RegCode is for use at http://community.linuxmint.com/ only
not necessary at http://forums.linuxmint.com.
