linux login problem

Actually by mistake i did set the sticky bit of my /etc/passwd file.
Now i m not able to use my linux partition.
during booting after many services are enabled i get this line and my system hangs after

that
"getpwnam failed for enabling swap space."

then a blue screen appears with the large white dailog box saying
"The gdm user does not exist.
please correct gdm configuration /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and restart

gdm"
then it prompts to press <ok>
when i do it blackscreen appears prompting
localhost login:
and
password:
i have already tried my old login and password but everytime it gives
me login incorrect!
what should i do now?
do i need to reinstall?
I tried to mount my linux partition with KNOPPIX CD. I found in my
/etc/passwd file as follows:
rpm:x:37:37::/var/lib/rpm:/sbin/nologin
ident:x:98:98ident user:/:/sbin/nologin
rpc:x:32:32:Portmapper RPC user:/:/sbin/nologin
pcap:x:77:77::/var/arpwatch:/sbin/nologin
ntp:x:38:38::/etc/ntp:/sbin/nologin
there is nothing like "root" in this file.

hi there

make an entry like this in ur /etc/passwd

root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

and the encrypted passwds are stored in /etc/shadow, which will be the same since u have not edited ur /etc/shadow

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

You triple posted, which is even worst than double posting.
