well, the kernel isn't just delveloped until they feel like changing the number. Plans are laid out about what is gonna be done in each major kernel release, and is generally developed in parallel to the current kernel, which is only typically updated with mroe minor things, hence the small version numebr changes. 2.4 took two years to come out, developed separetly to 2.2...

pretty sure 2.5 won't actually come out.. it'll be 2.6, as odd numbers are used for development, and even for stable releases.

or i'm talking rubbish...

2.5.x will come out, it just will not be considered a stable release. Linus said he will open 2.5 sometime after 2.4.15 or .16 if I recall correctly.

I tread this on linux today this morning,
Quote:
From: Linus Torvalds
Subject: Linux 2.4.15-pre4 - merge with Alan
Date: 12 Nov 2001 11:01:56 -0800

Ok, this kernel hopefully contains all the high-priority merges with Alan,
which means that as far as that is concerned, I'm done with 2.4.x and
ready to pass it on to Marcelo.
So we could be seeing 2.5.0 soon. *yay*
