Why doesn't someone create a Linux-friendly free ISP? Does anyone know of one? I tried searching for "free isp linux" and all I found was a bunch of forum questions like this one.

I have no problem dialing into Mindspring or now it is Earthlink whenever I do dial in. They have help online, just not over the phone though.

Unhappy Earthlink Setup help for OpenLinux 3.1

I am looking for specific help on connecting to my current
Earthlink account using Caldera OpenLinux 3.1 Beta
distribution.

I am using an external USR 56K V.90 modem.
Modem works fine w/ Win98, etc. and connects at V.90 115Kbs.

Using OL 3.1 and OL 2.2 I can connect using the modem,
but the connection disconnects after about 15 seconds.

I have tried both kppp and kvwdial (latest version) but both
return the same result.

I would rather not develop a chat scrip if I don't have to,
but would consider any advice. I have a PPP Howto listing,
but am looking for specific Earthlink Linux connection advice.

Thanks in advance.........

Plain wvdial

I believe that kwvdial (I mis-spelled in my 1st post), is
a KDE layered version of wvdial.

Does wvdial work for you? If so, are their special
options that you enable in the config file to get this to work
(like user authentication)?

I don't have a weird ? ISP, but I was never able to get any gui based ppp dialer to work.

All I had to do to get wvdial to work was;

wvdialconf etc/wvdial.conf

edit etc/wvdial.conf and add username, password and phone number

then just run

wvdial
you have to run as root, alternatively modify the wvdial.conf and wvdial to have S permissions.

Hope it helps.
