Linux for Pops
 

You may have seen this before but I have just now been seeing some TV ad's for it. http://www.telikin.com/

Based on tinycore and they seem to be providing all the correct legal requirement for opensourced code. I did that while looking to get the iso but it is copy protected darn it. I'd have liked to try it on a tablet.

I kind of wish them luck. Looks like a product that may suite a few segments of users.

Looks like a Custom LX panel and desktop menu like I used to run on my net book called puppeee linux.

All three models have low to medium specs. I don't like the interface, it looks like a kiosk machine and all tasks seem to be in the middle of the screen real estate.

I would rather put xbuntu on any of these models and just teach and show them what do do.

Telikin has been around for a while.

I think the clunky interface is designed with the notion that old folks like me can't afford glasses and can't figure stuff out, so we need great big icons, giant buttons, and a dumbed-down interface. It's a computer version of the Jitterbug phone: patronizing, condescending, and obnoxious.

I wouldn't buy one on a bet, but, frankly, I'm glad they are in the marketplace providing an alternative to Other Operating Systems We Could Name.

Afterthought:

If my kids had such a low opinion of me as to buy me one of these things (they don't--they know I went over to the Geek Side long ago), I'd disinherit them, not that I have much to disinherit them from.:)

The telikin laptop or netbook is $800. For $500 or a little less, you can get a acer chromebook with better specs.

I will agree the price seems high but part of that hopefully is their claim of support. Lord knows I support a lot of people's systems and there is no way I'd ever do that for free. (wait, I do that here don't I?)

Pretty sure no one here would buy it that knows a bunch about linux.

Maybe they will show up here asking for help on the clunky interface. On TV it looked easy for Grandma to use.

If someone gave it to me I'd play with it for a while. Maybe give it to my Ma and wait to see how long it lasted.

If it IS aimed at Senior Citizens that would explain the elevated price as we are supposed to have more money than we need - not that it is the case.

Saw a pic on the internet some time ago. I quote...

"No senior discounts. You've had twice as long to get the money!"

Something to that effect.

And twice as long for some organisation to try to take it all away - and that includes family.
I am perhaps better off than I have ever been in my life but only because:
My mortgage is paid up
My children have grown up and left
I don't care a toss about "keeping up with the Jonses"
I never do buy on the never never (except the mortgage)
I always buy well made before good looking.
I always check elsewhere before I buy.

I was looking at retiring and kind of a complex issue. On one hand I could work till I'm 70 and take the big numbers. On the other hand I might not live to be 70 so maybe 62 and poor would be OK. Unless of course if I were to live to be 98 then that would suck. Inflation and taxes are basically a grandparent tax. You'll never get enough cost of living to adjust for the cost of living.

The product is also such a limited market. Sure Dell has world wide huge numbers but this company has to make do with maybe 200 device at a time orders.

Anyway, I'll mark this as solved as it wasn't really even a question at all.
