Linux Font

I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum . If this is the wrong forum, I do apologize.
Anyway my problem is:
I am developing a user interface, which should work in Linux. So I would like to know which are the fonts supported by Linux & which is the best one.
Thanks .
Bose

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Linux-Genera and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves. Member Intro is a good place for introduction posts, but questions have a much bigger chance for responses in more technical forums.

Do you mean font type (Helvetica, Arial etc) or font format (TTF, Type 1 etc)? If it's the first one, many fonts are included, but you can't be sure that a specific font will be available in host system. That's why it's a good idea to use system settings and provide a dialog when user can change the font (and for example suggest one or two).

Two most common formats are TTF and Type1. They're usually both available.

X should choose a font for you, basically, you provide a set of criteria for a font, and the first one X finds is the font you get. So don't worry about specific fonts, just use the criteria matches and you'll do fine. ... or was it a different package that did that? (its hard to know with X, things go from separate, to becoming part of X fast it seems)

Yea I mean fonts like Helvetica, Arial etc.
Arial & san-serif is ok, other fonts like verdana,Tahoma,Century Gothic etc.. look alike.
