Linux File Server


I want to set up a Linux server that is a file server to be accessed over a network, I want a version of linux that all it does is be a file server. Is this possible, has anyone created a distro that is just a file server for a network? could anyone help out a linux newbie? thanks heaps

Hi

what OS are the client of the file server going to use? If they use Windows, then Samba is the choice. If clients are running Linux then u will probably want to use NFS.

As far as I know there is no distro which would act only as a file server. But u can install minimal installation of any distro and then just install Samba on it.

Yeah I know I need Samba, that much I do know, I just want to know if there is a distro, or if someone has made a distro that has nothing else installed on it except samba so all the processing power goes straight to samba

just want to pretty much make a file server black box
