Linux enthusiast help needed in Connecticut

Years ago I installed Kubuntu 7 for my neighbors in CT. He is an military retiree and I didn't charge him. Now I've moved and can't help them any more. It appears they attempted a dist-upgrade and borked it.

If there is anybody in proximity of Willimantic willing to help, please PM me.

The task is:
Back up user files to a USB stick.
Install Lubuntu as base (they have the CD) + help them to install software they need.
The HW is something like AMD 1.3 GHz with 512 MB of RAM (of my memory serves me correctly), nothing exotic. Standard internet connection via DSL modem with built-in NAT router.

Considering that some people may arrive at this page some time later via google, it may be worth pointing such (Conneticut GNU/Linux et al) folks at SCOSUG.

Y'know, rather than keeping all replies in private. Though sure, actual individual contacts should go to pm you are right.

hmmm... I see a flood of news concerning Willimantic's businesses shifting to linux but no sign of an area specific group for support.

This story has happy end now. I was able to assist them via email, Lubuntu is installed and working. :)

I just checked the SCOSUG link you included in your post, and I noticed there's nothing really there anymore - just a mostly blank page. I realize it's been seven years since this thread was started. It really does look like Linux User Groups are dying out. Also, what does the acronym SCOSUG stand for?

A web search indicates "Southern CT Open Source User Group".

Thanks!

You didn't happen to find a current URL for their site during that web search, did you? I'm just curious because there was another LUG in CT, but it's defunct. It would be cool if there was still a LUG in CT.

Nope, but there are references to a meetup in 2013 (https://www.meetup.com/newhavenio/events/130985482/) and an IRC channel (http://irc.netsplit.de/channels/deta...g&net=freenode).

If you web search SCOSUG, then you might find some more.

All the best!
