Linux Connect to internet via Windows XP wireless connection
Hi,
Here's my setup. I have two PCs. One Linux Fedora 11, the other Windows XP SP 3.
The Windows XP has a wireless connection to the internet. The Linux does not. The windows machine has two cards one wired, one wireless. So I have the wired one connected to the 4 port router in one port along with the Linux machine connected in another port.
What is the best and safest way to allow the linux machine to connect to the internet via the wireless network connection on my XP machine?
Thx much.

In XP you already have a wireless setup, is it necessary to use a wired connection again from the modem? If the modem 4 ports you can connect your linux machine directly to the modem.
If you really want to connect via your XP, then you can bridge the wireless and wired connection to the linux machine.

Thx for response.
I dont have a wireless connection on the linux. The router is a way to try to connect to the XP machine in order to use the XP's internet connection. I just dont know how to set it up. I can ping each ip address through the router. So it looks like i can communicate between the two.
Thx.

You dnt need a wireless in Linux to bridge the two cards in XP. Is there any reason to connect internet through XP? Why not directly? If you can provide us some info on why you need such a setup, it will be easy for us to think a solution.

You need to enable internet sharing on XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
Then set the lan IP from XP as the default GW in Linux, and off course put your linux in the same subnet as XP.
Don't forget to set the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf

Thx...The reason I can connect directly with linux is th I dont have a wireless card or usb device. I only have the ethernet port on that machine and am trying to save $$ by not buying a new wirless device for that machine.
Thx I'll try the suggestion.

If I were you I'd install Linux on wireless machine and Windows on the other one. Linux is much safer than Windows as a gateway.
