Well my system got hacked into before, I didn't take the precautions I should have, and I lost a lot of my settings.
OK, so basically you're looking for host hardening instructions and backup routines?
1. Fill in your profile details and if this is about a specific distribution then say so. Knowing which one you use can help us give you distro-specific info
2. For host hardening start by reading these two docs. They'll give you an overview of things to do:
UNIX Security Checklist v2.0:
http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/unix_s...cklist2.0.html
SANS, The Twenty Most Critical Internet Security Vulnerabilities:
http://www.sans.org/top20/
If you don't get what this is about then ask the moderator of this forum to move your thread to the Linux Security forum and ask for more detailed instructions which we can then add to this thread.
If you do get what this is about then read distro-specific info in the
LQ FAQ: Security references, post #1 under "Hardening, distro specific" and take it from there.
I'm kind of new at this. Maybe I should find a 1-800 number somewhere.
Uh. Aren't we the Linux communities virtual 1-800 number?
