Linux can't shut down my computer

When I try to shut down (halt, or shutdown from the desktop logout), the system eventually says "no more processes left in this runlevel" and won't do anything else. How can I fix this?

pan64 02-13-2013 12:10 AM

How did you try it? You can try the command: init 0 in a terminal as root. (better to use a console instead of a gnome-terminal or xterm or similar...)

Please post the output of 'lspci -k' and 'lsmod'. (I suspect the e1000e driver if it is there).

Lspci -k output:

I should mention that the system could shutdown correctly at first, and this problem started only after I upgraded most of the software (having installed from a liveCD that was two or three months old).

H_TeXMeX_H 02-13-2013 10:17 AM

Is this a laptop or a desktop ?

If it is a laptop try the 'pci=nomsi' boot option.

EDIT:

You say it started after you upgraded software. Well, it's probably related, so what software exactly ? Including the kernel ?

frankbell 02-13-2013 07:59 PM

Precisely what command are you using to shutdown the machine and how old is the machine? (I normally use shutdown now -h.)

Older machines (very old machines) may not be capable of powering themselves off.

sundialsvcs 02-13-2013 08:17 PM

It is true that computers can vary as to how (and if ...) they can be commanded by software to turn power-off. Is this what you're seeing? That Linux comes to a complete stop, prints "power off," then doesn't succeed in turning the power off?

It's a desktop. Ehh...the kernel might have been upgraded, but I'm not sure offhand. I just selected all upgrades in Synaptic and then unselected a few programs I didn't want, none of which could have had anything to do with the kernel (e.g. Libreoffice).

It's definitely not that old--going on five years. I most often shut down from the GUI logout screen, but occasionally use "halt" and sometimes "shutdown -h -t [time]".

Did you happen to uninstall acpid ?
