Linux boots to a blank screen

When I install Linux (Red Hat or Mandrake), stand alone or dual boot with Windows XP I reboot to a blank screen. Can someone please help? The blank screen complicates troubleshooting. Do I have a hardware conflict that I need to consider? The computer was new about a year ago.

60 GB Hard Disk
CD-RW
DVD-ROM

Do you see anything before the blank screen?

Do you know what kind of video card is in the computer?

I did a quick search on google and someone suggested it might be a conflict with the Intel 845g chipset. Perhaps you can disable DMA and see if it gets you further along in the boot process
