linux books

i'm looking for a really good book that explains the linux kernel, how it works, why it does what it does, etc, etc.

any suggestions?

O'Reily has a book on the Linux kernel.. I haven't read it but they put out great books.. and I have skimmed thru it and looks good from what I read.
