linux base file system


Hi

i just want to knwon what do u meen by base filesystem of linux

The file-system that needs to be compiled into
your kernel to be able to boot?

The kernel alone cannot run the computer. You need other parts to make it a working system. When we say base filesystem, most are referring to the bare minimum for a working system.

Well if you installed just a kernel, how you gonna communicate with the kernel, how is the OS going to be of any use to you. You need a shell to start off with and along comes with it built-in commands and so on.

I think one of the best places to learn about all of this is www.linuxfromscratch.com

Their book takes you thru the process of building your own distro with all the necessary basics to make it a working system. You don't have to build one, but reading it alone might help you understand it.
