"useful information about linux" means anything good enough to be put in an assignment.

You could always take a look at Linus Torvalds' book "Just for fun", which is about how the Linux kernel came into being. It's a pretty good read anyway. It's not exactly technical (well, it's not at all technical), but you haven't specified what kind of assignment this is - is it a technical essay, or something along the lines of the history of Linux? Given that information, people might be able to make more useful suggestions.

Perhaps even starting at Wikipedia and using the links and references in that document might be a good starting place. I wouldn't recommend using Wikipedia itself as a reference, but it could point you in the right direction.

Since you are already a user, it might be good to simply write about your experiences.

Can you give any more info on the emphasis they are looking for?

thank u guys for the replies, u guys here at LQ are really good and helpful,, as far as specifications about the assignment are considered, the assignment is just a general one on linux,, it isn't related to any paricular aspect of linux,, it needs to have something of everything about linux,, including a little bit of history, some comparisons between linux and windows, some technical bits also... so it is after all a general one....

I hope that i've made myself clear..

a university course is about knowing stuff for yourself. this doesn't really sound too taxing, comparing linux to windows etc... as above, if you're a user you already know enough i expect.

I can write about my experiences with linux,, but the problem is that i am only a newbie and i do not hvae enough experience of using linux to put that into a 15-20 page assignment.

I am from Pakistan, a country where hardly anyone knows about linux, therefore, in my assignment,, i will have to present linux from the beginning and also will have to try and convince them to use it as their operating system alongside telling them the merits and demerits of using linux..

I hope that i've made myself clear.

You've already listed some things to write about, here's some things you can google.

An introduction into F/OSS, then expand on Linux, explain about the kernel, the role different distributions play etc , perhaps mention some other popular F/OSS products (Apache, open office, firefox etc.)

It's history - Creators, theologies, business models etc. etc

Development time line - What happened when, how things forked etc.

Advantages, Disadvantages - It's strengths and weakness, perhaps a personal comparison between Linux and other OS' (millions of samey blogs comparing linux to windows out there).

Legalities - GPL code, proprietry packages, Lawsuits, SCO, MS-Novell, get thigns in there that show some real research.

Your personal experiences - How you found it, how you see it progressing, how you would LIKE to see it progressing.

Then a conclusion, summarising and making some profound point about...something

Anyway thats just off the top of my head, good luck.
