linux as a home security monitor

I am looking for information on interfacing Linux with a networked security camera dvr. I want to monitor and upload to offsite storage several security cameras. I have a pci bus card but it is less than optinal. I've looked at zoneminder and that is close but I don't want to use usb cameras. This is for home use, the goal is to save the recording even if the pc and dvr get stolen.

Using usb camera is optional in zoneminder. Here is an article detailing one user's experience setting up zoneminder to record exterior shots at one home, and the server elsewhere. You should be able to adapt his instructions to your situation.

Sourcetrunk had a podcast on Motion a while ago. Dmitri seemed to think it worked quite nicely.

For motion detection, I suggest Motion.
Light and with many options.
