Linux And windows at the same time????

hello
I have windows vista installed on my laptop and i wanna have a linux too.
i dont wanna lose my windows.
which distro allows me to have my windows and installing linux at the same time??

repo 04-06-2011 06:33 AM

Every distro will allow you to install a dual boot.
You could also use a live CD, or run linux in a virtual machine.

Kind regards

In short, all distros allow this. All distros are capable of dual-booting with Windows. I would recommend to shrink the Windows partition with the Windows partition manager and then use the free space to install the distro you want.

thanks.
You mean I have to make some of my hard unpartitioned and install linux on that???

TobiSGD 04-06-2011 06:39 AM

If you want to have the software-center you can also use Debian or a distro derived from Ubuntu. But it may be possible that you will have the same issues as with Ubuntu.
It may be better to explain your problems with Ubuntu to us, so that we eventually can help you.

Download some live cd's and see if your hardware is supported.
It depends what the problem is.
You could use kubuntu,xubuntu...

Kind regards

I had some problems with my display and I made a thread but nobody couldnt help me so I decided to install another distro.
I heard that mint is good and have software center.
As you are more experienced than me, whats your opinion about it??

repo 04-06-2011 06:48 AM

As said before, use the live CD and see.

Kind regards

TobiSGD 04-06-2011 06:56 AM

Linux Mint is a fine distro. But the problem is that all distros that use the Software Center are dereived from either Debian or Ubuntu, so it is possible that you will have the same issues with those other distros.
Best would be to follow repo's advice and test the distros using a live-CD.

partitioning your hard disk during installation or using a virtual machine are the only two good ways i see out of your problem, you can reinstall vista and Linux after formatting and partitioning your hard disk or use VMware Workstation or something to install Linux on a virtual hard disk without losing vista. good luck!

There is absolutely no need to reinstall Vista and Linux. Vista is totally capable (and I would recommend that way) to shrink its own partition to make space for other operating systems. And the OP stated already that he don't want to use a virtual machine. Please read threads carefully before posting.

Thanks
I have 3 partitions
and i installed vista on Drive C
now ia wanna install linux on drive D
What should I do?

TobiSGD 04-06-2011 08:30 AM

Delete the D:-partition and tell the Linux-installer to use the free space when it comes to partitioning. It will setup all the needed partitions for you.

You will need to shrink the Windows partition first, as others have said. The Linux installation can do this, but it is recommended to do this from within Windows before installing Linux. First check the integrity of your filesystem (defrag and check the disk).
You mentioned problems with Ubuntu. How long ago? There are 2 new versions each year (the next one due very soon now) and each one sees an improvement in hardware compatibility.
