Linux and Canon Printers
 

I've recently started using Linux as i was advised 'it was the best' but i cant print straight on a DVD/CD with it. I have a Canon Pixma iP3000 which is only 18 mths old. I've rang Canon and they cant advise cos they dont support Linux. I've tried the Canon site but it isnt any help either. When I click to print my Canon flashes green once and then X6 orange but doesnt print anything. I can print on paper but not through the cd tray. Can any one help me with this problem.

Classic----Person A tells person B that something is best for them---but without either party communicating the assumptions.

When you were advised that "Linux is best", what did the person know about what you would be using it for? And what DO you use it for??

In my experience, printing is not one of Linux's strong points. This said, just about anything can be made to work.

What SW are you printing from?
When you set up the printer, what driver did it use?

Some resources: Linuxprinting.org, Turboprint (Commercial package which MIGHT have better support for your printer than does the generic Linux system.

This won't help you much, but some of my reading says that Canon is near the bottom of the list in terms of supporting Linux. I now ask at the store if the product in question supports Linux. Some even say so right on the box!!! There is hope......

Hate to say this, but Canons' support for linux is second only to ATI.

Both are rubbish.

I got a Canon laserprinter that just will *not* print in linux.

The "support" people made it quite clear they neither know nor care about linux.

But I can tell you HP printers can work well in linux.

Canon do not give any information about their product and also don't bother to develop drivers for linux. So there is no solution.
DO NOT BUY CANON if you want to use it on LINUX, until they change position.

You might call their marketing departement to express yourself.

I am inclined to agree with the above, those printers are so cheap these days (great for XP systems though) but obviously the savings they make are in manufacturing/support/software development.

Canon have Linux drivers for my printer (Pixma iP1500), but they're only in RPM format so I can't use them. I know there's rpm2tgz, but some of the threads that I've read about it have made me weary. But yes, I'd not buy a Canon again.

there are drivers for ip4200 on canon's site, maybe for your printer as well

i have no experience on printing dvd-labels yet
