Linux and 180MB+ files = bad
 

I have two sticks of 256 ram, different brands which work just fine in windows, with linux on the same machine files larger than 180 megs (about) crash the system. Hard drive seems fine and pc seems fine overall. It will run a game server for 2.5 hours (most i'v ehad it up so far) without any problems. I also know this is not heat related as the pc has hosted a LAN server for 12 hours on end.
Any ideas other than the ram?

What are the files for? Maybe its the program your using with the files thats having the problem.

Over running its buffers?

I shoulda said something about that. I though of that one too so I tried both Ark and File-Roller and got the same results.

Hmm Arks usually quite good. It could be a memory problem check your Free RAM, to see how much you have left. before executing Ark, you may have run out of space and Swap Space for Ark to complete is manouvers with The file. Although really this shouldn't happen.

I'll check the ram, it is 512meg which I think would be enough, but things happen. I also was using the root partition for all of this instead of the home partition and the home partition seems to be working which what I might have been doing wrong. I restated the extraction process so I'll see how it works. Thanks for the help.

The partition was my problem. Extracted to the home partition with no problems. Can you tell I'm a noob?
