Where *I* live, far far away from US, the *toy* shops have a Xbox 360 with a giant HDTV screen, no doubt as a sop by MS. The PS3 is nowhere to be seen (physically) (in the same shops - you can see it in Sony World). So if it comes down to that, yes, all the general reasons for Linux-ing are true.
But that's not my entire motivation, as I already said.

Where I live (the Netherlands and I think we do not live that far apart), you see the same thing, although there is a place for sony too in the same shops often. But, that is irrelevant.

It is much like those evangelists, like the witnesses of Jehova (if that's a term in English too), who actually come to your door to tell you their good news. I am not interested, and if I am I will seek out the information, ask someone about it, etc. If however you come to me to tell me how great God, linux or windows really is, I am *not* inclined to using it. Rather, I would be inclined to think that it may not be a product for me, if this is a typical example of the user base.

Close - in English they are called Jehovah's Witnesses - same thing really.

I think that this is something many of us go through - we run Linux for the first time and cannot understand why the whole world doesn't understand things the way we do. After you've run it for a while you come to realise that the OS and PC is just a tool and it's the equivalent of arguing about hammers.

We refer to them as "Cult Members" in our household.

Well as long as you don't call scientologists "Cult members"... You'll have Tom Cruise to answer to. Oddly if you swap the l for another letter you probably won't get sued...

Heh, they're also considered Cult Members and then we laugh at their stupidity.
