Unhappy Linux 2.6.4 Boot Failure : "hda: max request size"

Hey,

I am upgrading from a 2.6.0 to a 2.6.4 kernel, with essentially the same kernel options/modules etc, yet when I boot 2.6.4, it locks up after the message

hda: max request size: 1024KiB

(theres more above it, but I can't access it)

I am using an a7v8x motherboardhd
and a
WDC WD800JB-00ETA0, ATA DISK drive

Any assistance, pointers, etc would be greatly appreciated (I haven't seen anyone else on the net with this problem)

I have exactly the same problem under a sony vaio pcg-grt896sp.
The pre-compiled 2.4.26 works fine, but no way with the 2.6.7.
I've tried the options: development drivers + APM enable PM at boot time + character devices vaio option without success. 'working on it.
